Somewhere Under the Sun
After accidentally killing a man, two best friends go on the run to flee the authorities.
We met at the film program at CSUN, California State University Northridge.
We headed into our last semester, ready to tackle the thesis film, the final project for the cinema and television students. We wanted to tell a fun little story about friendship, hope and happiness. But like everything else, the pandemic changed the scope of the entire project. In March 2020, we started the production of the 20 minute short film, Somewhere Under the Sun. We had been working on the story for the entire semester (the project was pitched in January 2020 & pre-production started in February). But, like the rest of the world, our lives had to be put on pause due to the pandemic. We went into lockdown with a half-finished film. Thankfully, due to the support of our professor, the school and loving friends and family, we continued production in July. We were extremely lucky, because a day after we wrapped, an even worse, more extreme lockdown occurred in Los Angeles. We are a group of diverse students from around the world. Sigrún, the creator of Somewhere Under the Sun, moved back home to Iceland, but the post production continued. Many months later, in March 2021, we finally finished. A year after we first got together to tell this story, we watched our film and realized that though it is still fun and hopeful, it is also emotional and sad. It's a short film that mirrors our journey through graduation, lockdown and separation. It's a short film that we are extremely proud of. Thank you for the taking the time to get to know us and our story. |
